Record Stand - Commission

.

.

The brief for this commission was to design and construct a record stand to hold a lifelong Rock n Roll vinyl collection.

The owner of the collection had in his University days stored the original collection in a crate. The final design was inspired to embody an Egyptian

style canopic jar with African animal motifs (reflecting the owner's philanthropic dedication to African animal life). The legs of the piece were designed to oscillate when a record was removed (imitating an animal's walking motion, carrying its precious cargo through to the afterlife - the rock n roll motif would also ROCK simultaneously)..... This would in turn make the acrylic Rock n Roll gable swing back and forth highlighting the genre of the collection in a kinetic piece of furniture. Construction techniques included welding, forging, wire work, airbrushing, using found objects and handmade pieces

The brief for this commission was to complete the space flanking the Hob with complementary utilitarian shelving.

Inspired by many a craftsman's workshop, glass jars of varying capacities, sizes and shapes were screwed to the base of the Oregon Pine shelving.

Each bottle was sandblasted with a label of the spice or herb contained, with larger jars containing granola and oats. These Jars were easily detached and

replaced for cooking purposes showing their contents for ease of access and inspiration. Over 200 cookery books were sourced to complete the Herb & Spice Workshop. Construction techniques included photoshopped graphics, welding, forging, carpentry, airbrushing, sandblasting, sealing, and installation.

Materials : Oregon Pine and mild Steel. glass jars.

Designed and constructed by Anthony Garrett  in 2014 this 100 square meter stage and hard wood deck was constructed from Australian Karrie

and stage with 100mm thick treated pine for flexibility. The Australian Karri lumber was cut to size from larger stock pieces. Stainless steel screws were used

for setting the wood stock. Resting stilts were shaped and set in 550cm cubed concrete blocks (over 100). These were shaped to fit the root system of the

Pecan trees and other established foliage. The raised stage was stained to match the Burgundy shade of the Australian Karrie.

The stage was intended to be used for plays and performance events in this home close to the centre of a village town in the South African countryside.

Construction techniques included, Carpentry - shaping, plaining & cutting.

Materials : Australian Karrie Hard wood, Stainless steel screws, Bitumen treated posts, Treated Soft pine.
